At-home euthanasia

No promise is made in advance that the animal will be put to sleep. After meeting the animal, it is assessed whether euthanasia is the most animal-friendly option; sometimes treatment options are still available.

How euthanasia is carried out

The animal is first placed fully under anaesthesia, after which a second medication is given. The procedure and anaesthesia are adapted to the animal’s temperament and underlying illness.

• Cats and rabbits: injections into a blood vessel, muscle or under the skin
• Dogs: injections through an IV in a front or hind leg, with alternatives when shaving causes stress

Aftercare

There are several options after the animal has died, including cremation, rendering and burial. Transport to the crematorium can be arranged.
